I just recently upgraded my 27″ CRT TV to a nice 32″ LCD, this now allows me to enjoy Blu-ray discs via my PS3. I already have a few that I purchased after I got the PS3 when I came across them cheap knowing that I would eventually be upgrading my TV. This is wonderful… but now I come into the problem of what to do with new releases. I thought it would be easy to pick and choose what releases to go with BD or DVD, but it’s getting difficult now.
For instance, Dollhouse: Season One. Do I go with the DVD since I have a habit of watching TV shows on DVD as I am going to sleep everynight (as I don’t have a BD player in bedroom right now), or do I go with the superior pic quality? Same with Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series, this is definitely a series that would be damn nice to look at in high def, but the lack of portability between rooms kind of annoys me. And I am just not ready to upgrade to BD in the bedroom yet.
I guess price is the big problem solver in the end. Right now I think there is an $18 difference between the Dollhouse BD and DVD. $18 is enough to make me not want to go with BD. I just don’t want to regret it a few years from now.
I am so glad that I have held out on buying these season sets as they’ve been coming out. This set is absolutely gorgeous. July 28th can’t get here fast enough, I still haven’t watched S4.5 (although I unfortunately know who the last Cylon was, thanks SciFi commercials).
I will truly miss this show, I never would have expected it to be as good as it was.
I have been a long time fan of vampire shows on TV, Dark Shadows, Forever Knight, I liked what I saw of Moonlight, and of course there is Buffy and Angel. When I heard that HBO was working on a vampire series I was excited, finding out the Alan Ball of Six Feet Under was the creator I was even more excited. When I found out that Anna Paquin was starring in it I could barely contain myself.
True Blood, premiering Sept. 7th on HBO, takes place in a parallel reality where vampires have recently “come out of the coffin” and outed themselves to the world. With the invention of a synthetic blood drink called Tru Blood the vampires no longer need to feed on humans for survival. Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) works as a waitress in Merlotte’s, a bar in rural Lousiana. She is intrigued by the vampires and is excited when Merlotte’s gets its first vampire customer, the 173 year old Bill. Sookie has a not-so-well-kept secret of her own in that she can hear the thoughts of every one around her.
The Best Buy exclusive disc (free with the purchase of an HBO TV on DVD title) comes with the first episode of True Blood, “Strange Love.” I wasn’t sure what to expect from the show going into it. I knew from the viral campaign that there would obviously be a social commentary, but what I didn’t expect was that the show would be as dark and sexual as it is. From oral, to “fangbangers”, to even some chains; there was a lot of sexuality crammed into these 58 minutes. The series also has a nice cast of characters that give the show some minutes of laughter. Sookie’s best friend Tara and Merlotte’s short order cook Lafayette both bring some big laughs in this episode.
All in all it is a nice introductory episode. “Strange Love” sets up the locale and the characters and seems to touch on where the series will be heading. It has definitely caught my interest and I will be faithfully watching this series throughout it’s 12 episode run. I am also interested in reading some of the “Southern Vampire” books the TV show is based on by Charlaine Harris.
The down sides to this particular DVD is that it only has a 2.0 soundtrack and is watermarked with a huge HBO logo across the middle of the screen throughout the entire episode. I don’t mind the intermittent “Personal use” text that pops up, but there is no need to watermark a DVD that you have released to the public.
Finally, Project Runway Season 4 premiered this past Wednesday. I have been waiting on this one for a while. So far it seems like it will be a good group. The majority of the people seem to have a clue as to what the fuck they are doing. Here are some of my faves so far:
Marion - He seems very quiet right now, but I think that will change as he moves ahead in the competition. I wasn’t that crazy for the outfit he made in the first episode, but he seems to have a good fashion sense.
Christian - Right now my fave. It looks like he will have a good style, and he definitely seems to know what he is doing. I have a feeling there will be a lot of drama in the group and he will be my favorite commentator on all of it.
Steven - Ok, the guy looks like a serial killer. That is someone I could get behind.
Some of the people that I don’t like right off the bat:
Elisa - Absolutely clueless. I can’t stand granola-y people like that. Doesn’t seem to know what she is doing. Fancies herself an arteest.
Jack - He just rubs me the wrong way. Wasn’t crazy about his design and he wears tacky t-shirts.
I was surprised today to find my Ghost Hunter S2 replacement sets in the mail. Especially because I never actually got around to sending in my covers as proof of purchase. I had contacted Big Vision Entertainment because I had gotten my two Season 2 covers signed by Jason and Grant at Chiller last year so there was no way I was sending in my covers. I had put my address in the email hoping they would just say “OK” and not make me actually do anything. lol. They said I had to photocopy them, and even though I sit maybe 20-30′ from a photocopier every day at work I never got around to doing it.
They must have picked up on my immense slack and sent them anyway.
So thanks Big Vision! Bob would be proud!
And I promise, this should be the last Ghost Hunters related post for November.
The site is definitely working 100% again now. What a pain in the ass it was. Thankfully none of the really important sites I have hosted on this box were affected. Anyway, on to the post.
The Ghost Hunters did their follow-up show to their live investigation from last week. I have to say it was somewhat of a let down. The reveal didn’t really show us any more evidence than what was already shown on the actual live broadcast. Their was a little bit of some new investigation footage that wasn’t aired, but nothing amazing happened. The better footage of the ball moving on the second floor was interesting though, so much clearer on the handheld DV than what was shown originally. I was kind of surprised that they didn’t bring up/apologize for the shitty attitudes of those two girls. There was a big outcry on a few sites/forums about their bitchiness and I know a number of people contacted TAPS and/or SciFi. They did edit the contestant footage shot with them well enough to conceal the cuntiness though.
The second half of the show was really interesting though. Some redneck house that seemed to have atleast two “ghosts”. The footage they caught of the “big man” on the thermal was pretty compelling. Since it was the season finale I don’t think there is going to be anything until January when Ghost Hunters International starts.
Here is an old, but good Ghost Hunters spoof from Chris Elliott:
So I stupidly (with the spurring of Stewie) signed up for NaBloPoMo. So if all goes well you should see atleast one new post a day from me. I know, what was I thinking? I haven’t updated this blog in like 3 months. Really, I don’t know what I was thinking, but WTF let’s see if I can do it.
So as I was trying to think of what to write about on the first day I figured it might be best to post about what I just did for the last 6 hours: watched the Halloween Ghost Hunters Live special. Yes, 6 hours of watching the TAPS team investigate the Waverly Sanatorium. I think I enjoyed it more this year than last years at The Stanley surprisingly. They still brought on a wrestler as the special guest thanks to the idiocy that is SciFi Channel, but he was definitely a lot better than the jackass wrestler last year. There were some dull moments, usually those that had Kristin and Heather on the screen. These are two of the worst “investigators” ever on the show. Let’s sit on our asses and ask the ghosts to rub our feet. WTF? And seriously… the instant you pull out Dowsing Rods, you lose. That simple. You can not be taken seriously.
They used this event to push the Hunt for the new Hunter contest that has been going on for a while now, and had the three finalists do a quick bit of investigating with some of the team members. Really, all three of the contestants blew. None of them knew wtf they were doing and obviously this contest just drew all of the reality TV type contestants. I would bet money that they also have applied for things like Stan Lee’s piece of shit Superhero show. Mark, the first contestant to go, was completely boring and I honestly have to question if he even had an interest in the paranormal before signing up for this thing. Deanna, the second girl, was ok. She was the best of the bunch, but that isn’t saying much. She atleast seemed to be somewhat into it. Pat, the last guy to go was fucked from the get-go. The two lazy asses (above) that he was teamed up with did nothing but berate him the whole time. He sucked and would have sucked with or without that, but it still was annoying. They were belittling his virgin attempt at EVPs, but yet you are the same dumb bitches who were using two metal sticks to find ghosts only a short time before. Of course, since he still thought he had some chance of winning he let it all slide and said nothing but nice things about them after the fact.
Not all was bad though. There were some interesting events that happened and I will be curious to see how they play out on the follow-up evidence show next week. I am not expecting too much, but you never know. They did get some interesting footage from Waverly last time they were there:
I’m sure I will have some comments on the show once it airs next week. I wanted to talk a bit about Ghost Hunters International, but I’ll save that for another post.
Looks like there will be a return by Joss Whedon to the Buffyverse, and it is looking good:
“So what’s going on in the extended Buffyverse? Well, you may recall the show ended with the creation of an army of Slayers. Now they’re organized, and the tide has turned in favor of the good guys. Ah, but you know how much Whedon hates winners: Soon an ‘old enemy’ surfaces (Dark Horse is cagey on Big Bad’s identity), and Dawn starts ‘experiencing serious growing pains.’”
It’s been awhile since my last update, when I of course said I would be updating more. I just checked and it is a month to the day actually.
Flock. Well, I used flock for a few days after I had made my initial blog post about it. I ended up not using it anymore once I realized how much of a pig it was. That browser sure sucked up some memory. I was talking with Alien Redrum about Flock and I don’t remember who, but one of us thought to look at the processes running on Windows and noticed that this thing was using like 10x the amount of memory that Firefox used. I closed the browser and haven’t looked back. Maybe I will relook at it down the road, but for now it is back to Firefox.
Speaking of Firefox, I noticed something interesting in the stats of a new website that I started with a friend of mine called Soundsect. I was looking through the stats of the visitors to the site and noticed something I had never seen before, Internet Explorer was not the top browser used by the visitors to my site. It was in second, but a distant second. I haven’t really kept on any of my other sites’ stats in the last few years, so maybe that has been a fairly common trend, but I was surprised. The stats as of sometime yesterday afternoon are:
Firefox: 59.8 %
MS Internet Explorer: 28.8 %
Safari: 6.5 %
Opera: 4.3 %
Mozilla: 0.3 %
UP.Browser (PDA/Phone browser): 0.1 %
Pretty damn surprising, IMO. Also, to be fair the site is geared towards a younger crowd, who would be more inclined to adopt Firefox as their browser of choice. It was also interesting to see that I was not the only one checking out the site on my phone and Palm.
So, what’s the “Runway” in the title? Just to piss off a certain someone I just needed to mention that the new season of Project Runway started this past Wednesday and it looks to be one hell of a season. Lots of potential drama in the works it seems. Not sure who I am rooting for yet, hell, it took a number of episodes for even Santino and Jay to grow on me. Can’t really tell who has any real talent yet, but some of the designers definitely surpised me in the first round. I expected some crap by a few individuals and they seemed to turn out some decent pieces. We’ll see.
Expect another post in the next day or so, I want to talk about OBEs a bit since it was a topic on Opie and Anthony this morning and made me remember some of the weird things that happened to me in my youth.
Last night was the finale for one of the best reality shows on TV, Project Runway. Up for the main prize (a car, some cash, an internship) were the final 3 designers: Santino Rice, Chloe Dao and Daniel V. Out of the final three the only person with even a hint of real talent IMO was Santino Rice. That alone is pretty sad. Last years contestants had so much more talent and skill. I thought the majority of people this year were “OK” at best. Chloe should have never made it into the final three. Her designs were unappealing and dull. Daniel, while I though he sucked 99% of the time atleast had the most wins throughout the season and was the judges pet, so it is understandable why he made it. I would have much preferred to see Kara make it into the final 3. She wasn’t always good, but when she pulled a good design out, it was real good. And as was proven with her showing during fashion week she definitely should have been a contender.
Anyway, AK and I couldn’t wait to see the final last night, we fired up the DVR and watched it. It was a pretty good finale up until the end. WTF? Chloe wins?? Wha-wha-wh-what?? Santino is knocked out immediately and is barely even given a thought of winning? This makes no sense. Santino’s collection was definitely the strongest one there. He finally listens to what the judges have been telling him the whole time and then they turn around and say it “wasn’t him”. I haven’t listened to Tim Gunn’s last podcast, but from everything else he seems to think Santino’s was the strongest as well. I sure as hell would trust Tim Gunn over Debra Messing as a judge any day.
It sucks, but atleast that pompous prick Daniel V. didn’t win. He needed to get knocked off his pedestal a bit. Besides, his tassle things were fucking ridiculous.
